On March 3, 2022, the US House of Representatives passed the Camp Lejeune Justice Act. The bill was originally introduced in the House by Representative Matt Cartwright of Pennsylvania, Representative Greg Murphy of North Carolina, and David Price of North Carolina in 2021. The Camp Lejeune Justice Act was introduced to provide judicial relief to those harmed by exposure to toxic water at Camp Lejeune and their family members. The bill was later added to bipartisan legislation HR 3967, the Honoring our PACT Act. The Act passed the House by a vote of 256-174. The Act will improve access to health care and benefits for an estimated 3.5 million veterans with toxic exposure.
The bill’s passage as part of the Honoring our PACT Act is a major victory for all veterans, civilians, and their family members who served, worked, or lived at Camp Lejeune and were exposed to toxic drinking water. Those who perished from and those who have been living with severe injuries linked to the water exposure through no fault of their own deserve justice. They have been unable to obtain justice due to a unique provision in North Carolina law.
