In October 1989, the EPA designated Camp Lejeune as a Superfund site due to the hazardous toxic waste that had been dumped into vacant lots sourced for water on base. The US Navy is the lead agency responsible for investigating and cleaning up contamination at Camp Lejeune. The Navy, EPA, and North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) are responsible for cleaning up the Superfund site and protecting people and the environment from contamination. These agencies have been investigating and cleaning up the Camp Lejeune contamination since 1992.
The cleanup operations carry on over 30 years after they began and are expected to continue until a final remedial action can be completed and the contaminated sites can be returned to productive use.
